Principal Embedded Design Engineer

We are seeking a professional individual who will serve as a Principal Embedded Design Engineer, responsible for prototype requirements, design, layout, test, document, manufacturing oversight, and software collaboration. The designed systems will integrate multiple network protocols including RF, peer-to-peer, and traditional networks and will integrate microprocessors and microcontrollers into hardware solutions.

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Gather requirements to develop a potential solution with trade-offs for bill-of-materials selection
  • Hardware simulation, layout, and test tool expertise
  • Integrated Circuit (IC) selection with focus on RF amplifiers and antennas, radio controllers, and high-throughput connectivity
  • Breadboard and prototyping of hardware design
  • Ability to test products: design, debug, and integrate hardware with drivers, protocols, and other firmware code
  • Responsible for hardware design, layout, and modifications for RF optimization

  • Internal and external team communications to describe, understand, troubleshoot and iterate
    complex designs and problems
  • Attention to detail and solving prototype/product issues with minimal impacts to cost and
    schedule
  • “Out of the box” thinking and ability to manage multiple competing projects at once
  • Extensive knowledge of embedded systems design, roadmap, and integration
  • Experience designing and developing real-time microcontroller based systems (ARM, Cortex M,
    Atheros, PIC, etc.)
  • Strong troubleshooting skills using test equipment (oscilloscope, spectrum analyzers, etc.)
  • Experience in circuit and system design for prototype and manufacturing
  • Understanding of radar and radio theory, including beam forming and beam steering
    technologies
  • Knowledgeable in power, amplifier, filtering, FPGA, SDR and other RF/networking technologies
  • Experience applying RTOS, SPI, I2C, and UART and familiarity with data communication
    protocols
  • Ability to write, maintain, develop and integrate with embedded firmware
  • Extensive knowledge of power management, including adaptive power techniques

Desired: 

  • Knowledge of ad hoc and mesh networks
  • Understanding of digital system design (circuit design, layout, firmware)
  • Wireless RF network knowledge of spectrum attenuation, propagation, and signal loss
  • Experience in or knowledge of modifying Digi, Ubiquiti, Marvell, and TI products
  • Experience with domain specific tools (CC Studio, Matlab, Altium, OrCAD/Cadence, etc.)
  • Experience with Zigbee, DigiMesh, Yocto Project or RTOS a plus 
  • Working knowledge of continuous integration to include Git, Agile and/or Kanban 
  • C/C++ and additional programming languages like Java
  • Working knowledge of the Linux OS and kernel, device driver development, wireless networking, and host systems

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or equivalent experience
